Today, for the first time in years, I did an “exercise video”. It was actually a Denise Austin cardio workout. It’s funny, because I used to belong to a gym many years ago and I did aerobics and loved it, but I could never do Denise’s workouts because her energy level was a bit much for me! However, when I flipped through my choices this morning on TV and saw that her workout was about 12 min of cardio, I knew it was just what I needed.
You see, for the past 12 years or so, I’ve religiously used a home treadmill. It became a habit and I liked it because it was convenient and I could be in and out of my basement in 20-30 min, take a shower and then begin my day. This ended about almost a month ago when our basement and almost everything in there was destroyed in the flash floods that came through Maryland. My treadmill was sitting in 4 feet of water, so of course, it would no longer work.
Running on the treadmill was extremely therapeutic. I don’t consider myself a runner, but I definitely see the benefits. I woke up this morning feeling fat and a little down, because I didn’t have my treadmill and I didn’t want to go out in the cold. So, I had to make a decision. It was a great effort I tell you, but I had recently investigated some of the workouts on TV, so thought I’d give one of them a try.
When I don’t exercise, my asthma returns, my eyes get really dry, my belly fat grows, I can’t eat as much (!), my skin breaks out, I don’t sleep as well, I feel moodier, I get aches and pains.. The list goes on and on. I almost have to exercise, because I immediately feel the consequences when I don’t. However, realise that this is a woman in her mid forties writing this. If you are much younger than me, you probably won’t fall apart quite as quickly!
If you’re not active in any way, or want to increase your exercise routine, write down all of the benefits of exercise, to you. Don’t worry about what “they say”. Other than the obvious (weight), what would you like to improve? It’s ok to be vain. At the end of the day, it’s all about looking and feeling healthier. So write down the results you want. For example, would you like to:
Have more energy
Improve your waistline
Get off medication
Walk up a few steps without being out of breath
Wear nicer fitting clothes
Be able to run around with your children
Lower your blood pressure
Have more self esteem
Increase your self confidence
Lower your cholesterol
What’s your motivation?
